The two companies announced the collaboration for the HDR10+ project, the latest high dynamic range imaging technology, with Amazon video content available on Samsung’s premium TVs.
The technology is envisioned to produce improved contrast and colors on an expanded range of televisions. HDR10+ is a step up to HDR10 open standard featuring Dynamic Tone Mapping. This feature allows a high dynamic range (HDR) TV to automatically adjust brightness levels by scene or even by frame.
“As an advanced HDR10 technology, HDR10+ offers an unparalleled HDR viewing experience — vivid picture, better contrast and accurate colors — that brings HDR video to life,” said Kyoungwon Lim, Vice President of Visual Display Division at Samsung Electronics. “We’re excited to work with world-class industry partners, including Amazon Video, to bring more amazing HDR content directly to our 2017 UHD TVs, including our QLED TV lineup.”
All of this year’s Samsung’s UHD TV models, including the premium QLED TV lineup, support HDR10+. Samsung plans a firmware update for the 2016 UHD TVs to support HDR10+. Samsung’s latest QLED TVs come with up to 2,000 nits of brightness, which the Korean tech giant claims can generate “real black” color without any distortion whatsoever, regardless of the viewing angle.
“Together with Samsung, we are excited to offer customers an enhanced viewing experience on a broad range of devices,” said Greg Hart, Vice President of Amazon Video, worldwide. “At Amazon, we are constantly innovating on behalf of customers and are thrilled to be the first streaming service provider to work with Samsung to make HDR10+ available on Prime Video globally later this year.”
This isn’t the first time the two companies joined forces. In May 2015, Samsung and Amazon Video were the first in the field to bring HDR to the market using the HDR10 open standard. Samsung has also partnered with YouTube and other companies that can deliver HDR content and integrate it into its products.
