Deepika Padukone was born on January 5th, 1986 in Copenhagen, Denmark. She is the daughter of former badminton player Prakash Padukone, while her mother is a travel agent. However, Deepika was raised in Bangalore where her family relocated in 1987 and still resides there. She has a younger sister named Anisha who is a professional golfer.
Deepika attended Bangalore’s Sophia High School. At that time, she was working as a fashion model and abandoned training badminton which she played from a young age. Still, Deepika Padukone found time to sign up at the Mount Carmel College to finish her undergraduate studies. After that, she enrolled at the Indira Gandhi National Open University for a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology, but never graduated as she opted to fully pursue her modeling career.
In 2004, Deepika Padukone began a full-time career in the world of modeling, gaining some early recognition in tv commercials for various brands and products. A year later, she made her runway debut and won the “Model of the Year” award at the Kingfisher Fashion Awards. By appearing in music videos and ad campaigns, Deepika Padukone’s fame further increased. At the age of 21, Deepika moved to Mumbai and stayed at her aunt’s home. She started receiving offers for film roles and subsequently enrolled for an acting course to prepare for the upcoming challenges.
Padukone’s first movie role came in 2006 in a romantic comedy called “Aishwarya”. The film was a major commercial success and provided a great start for Deepika’s acting career. She followed it up with a 2007 reincarnation melodrama “Om Shanti Om” in which she played dual roles. It was the highest-grossing film of the year and consequently cemented Padukone’s status as an upcoming movie star. At the Filmfare Awards ceremony, she was awarded the Best Female Debut Award and received her first nomination in the Best Actress category.
With the exception of “Love Aaj Kal” for which she received another nomination for Best Actress, Padukone starred in a series of movies for which critics panned her performances. This proved to be a tough time for Deepika, with much of her movies underperforming at the box office.
However, the romantic comedy “Cocktail” in 2012 brought critic’s praise for Padukone’s performance, earning her Best Actress nominations at several award ceremonies while also being a commercial success. Next year was the most successful in her career, appearing in four of the top-grossing productions of the year, including “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani” and “Chennai Express”. 2013 was the year Deepika Padukone established herself as a leading actress of contemporary Hindi cinema, winning several awards.
For the next two years, Padukone starred in seven movies, most notable being “Piku” (2015) for which she received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress and “Bajirao Mastani” for which she received a nomination for Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
Alongside her acting career, Deepika Padukone often participates in stage shows and pens columns covering a wide array of issues. She is a strong proponent of feminism and vocal about the effects of depression. Deepika has also designed her own line of clothing for women and is the founder of The Live Love Laugh Foundation, which creates awareness on mental health in India.
Regarding her love life, Deepika Padukone was engaged to actor Muzammil Ibrahim in 2004 but divorced quickly. Although she was linked to many fellow actors over the past few years, she is still single.
What’s Deepika Paduoke doing now
Western audiences will get to see Padukone in her first Hollywood project in “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” later this month. She will play the lead female role opposite Vin Diesel in the action movie. She was initially offered a part in Furious 7, another Vin Diesel movie, but had to back out due to her her Bollywood commitments.
She has also finished filming for an item number in a romance film called “Raabta”. Additionally, Deepika Padukone will collaborate with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Ranveer Singh for the third time in the historical drama “Padmavati”. No doubt it is going to be a busy year for Padukone.
