Travis Willingham is an American voice actor working on various English language dubs of popular Japanese anime shows, as well as numerous cartoons and video games. He is perhaps best known as the voice Roy Mustang in English dub version of “Fullmetal Alchemist” and also as Thor in many Marvel cartoons.
Early life of Travis Willingham
Travis Willingham was born on August 3rd, 1981 in Dallas, Texas. He spent much of his early years in Dallas, even starting his career there. Texan to the core, he attended the Texas Christian University in the nearby Fort Worth, enrolling in the university’s theater program. He graduated in 2003 and subsequently moved to Los Angeles to further pursue his voice acting career.
Career – Fullmetal Alchemist, Dragon Ball Z
Travis Willingham’s initial career undertakings were tied with various popular Japanese anime titles developed specifically for the US market. He provided voice work for different characters on “Dragon Ball Z”, “Detective Conan” and others before moving to LA. As with the most of the cases of fellow actors, the move opened many opportunities for Travis.
Soon, one of his signature roles came to light. Travis Willingham rose to prominence in the voice-acting world for his portrayal of Roy Mustang in the “Fullmetal Alchemist”, including video games, TV series, and English dubs. He also worked on many Marvel animations, voicing Thor and The Incredible Hulk, among others. It’s hard to single out some of the work Travis has done as there is so much, including “Naruto”, “Bleach”, “Naruto Shippūden”, “One Piece” and much, much more.
Travis Willingham is also an avid gaming persona with an equally successful video game career. Thanks to his sports and stunt background, Travis is also a familiar face in motion capture world. Due to his tall likeness, he has performed in the theatrical release of “Thor” in 2011 as a frost giant. He also worked in a multitude of blockbuster video game titles such as “Halo 4”, “Halo 5”, “Call of Duty: Black Ops II”, “Resident Evil 6”, “Grand Theft Auto V”, “Far Cry 4” , “StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void” and many others. He is the current voice of Knuckles the Echidna character in the “Sonic the Hedgehog” franchise. His vast portfolio includes over 200 video games and animation titles, with the number continually rising.
Travis Willingham has also had some minor live action roles, “Prison-A-Go-Go!”, “The Guardian”, “Secondhand Lions” and “A Perfect Getaway”. However, his focus is on voice acting so there is very little live-acting in his career, the better part being motion capture.
His full name is Travis Hampton Willingham. Still, he often uses alternate names in his work such as Kent Hamption, Kent Hampton, Travis Willingrod and Johnny Hildo. At 1.93 meters tall, he has a rather commanding and athletic figure, thanks to his athletic background. He is an avid triathlon fan (a race consisting of swimming, cycling and running), regularly participating in events across the country. He was a National Finalist in the Irene Ryan Competition at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The competition awards student performers wishing to pursue further education in theater.
Regarding his love life, Travis Willingham is happily married to fellow voice actress Laura Bailey. The two were in a long-time commitment and finally married on September 25, 2011. They worked together on “Fullmetal Alchemist” as the voices of Roy Mustang and Lust. Currently residing in Los Angeles, the couple works together every once in awhile, seeing as they are in the same profession.
What’s Travis WIllingham doing now?
To say that Travis Willingham is keeping himself busy would be an understatement. He has a recurring role on “Critical Role”, a live streamed Dungeons and Dragons game shown once a week on Geek & Sundry, a very popular Twitch channel. His wife Laura is one of the co-stars. He continues voicing Thor in various Marvel’s shows, including “Avengers Assemble” and “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy”. He is the voice of King Roland II in Disney Jr’s hit show “Sofia the First” while working on a number of upcoming video games. Most recently, he provided the voice for video game blockbusters like “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End”, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered”, “World of Warcraft: Legion” and the upcoming “Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue”. Add in his long love of triathlon and no doubt Travis will be busy for some time.
